NPA officers to target cyber-attacks

The National Police Agency plans to put senior officers in charge of battling cyber-attacks in fiscal 2014 in a bid to contain such crime.

Two senior officers will be appointed to head NPA efforts to tackle cybercrime, including illegal money transfers and the theft of confidential information.

They also will be responsible for making better use of personnel and equipment across sections and prefectures, improving analysis and the sharing of crime information, and overseeing exchanges with the private sector and research institutes.

The agency also plans to set up a cybersecurity research and training center at the National Police Academy to provide advanced technological research and training for all officers.

The agency plans to request ¥2.617 billion for such measures under the budget for fiscal 2014 beginning in March, up ¥835 million, or 47 percent, from the previous year.
