A call from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) two days ago prompted its Indian counterpart to leap into a first of its kind international operation against cyber hackers. Based on inputs from the US agency, officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday cracked down on various locations in Mumbai, Pune and Ghaziabad to uncover a racket that allegedly hacked 900 email accounts internationally, 171 of Indians.
The agency is probing all possible angles, from individual spying to corporate espionage and even terrorism-related activity. The CBI has not ruled out the possibility of widespread financial fraud through hacking.
