Europe and its battle against cyber crime

2013 was the year for new cyber security laws and regulations across Europe. Cyber criminals have hacked NATO, government agencies and corporations for some years and Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recently announced the hacking of 16 million German email accounts, a massive security breach very similar to one that happened in South Korea in July 2013.

In February 2013 in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Portugal, and Romania, online criminals attacked EU government computers with malware called “MiniDuke”, which also affected individuals across Europe.

The impact of these attacks is often wider than first analysis: hackers are also likely to get access to users’ other e-commerce accounts if those users re-use the same passwords.
